Bucharest is the capital and the largest city of Romania, as well as its cultural, industrial, and financial center.
Bucharest's history alternated periods of development and decline from the early settlements in antiquity until its consolidation as the national capital of Romania in 1862.
During Nicolae Ceaușescu's leadership (1965–89), much of the historic part of the city was demolished and replaced by "Socialist realism" style development.
Among them is the Palace of the Parliament. The Palace is recognized as the second-largest (after The Pentagon) and the most expensive administrative building in the world; even with many conferences, symposia, museums and other functions and events in the place there, it still has about 70% space empty.
The Romanian Revolution of 1989 led to the overthrow, conviction and execution of the Ceaușescus. The couple was originally buried in simple graves at Ghencea Cemetery in Bucharest, on opposite sides of a path; their graves were often decorated with flowers and symbols of communist rule.
