Landed in Munich, we drove along Bavaria to Salzburg, the land of Mozart and "Sound of Music".
Lush forest, green meadows, majestic mountains, the only thing missing was a clear sky.
Hallstatt is about 2 hours to the east of Salzburg. It is Rick Steves' favorite town in Europe. I have to come back again as I only saw her under a cloudy and rainy sky this time.
Grossglockner scenic road was not as hard to navigate as anticipated, as there were only a handful of cars present due to the weather. Snow and clouds added some dramatic feel. It would be much more pleasant on a fair day.
We took a u-turn on Grossglockner and headed to Innsbruck. The sun shined through the clouds and the scenes were simply spectacular.
There are many great attractions worth stopping by along the route, like water fall, ice cave, lakes, gorges, medieval villages and historical sites, if only we had more time!
Neuschwanstein Castle is in Fussen, Germany. One thing to remember is to book ticket online beforehand, especially for weekend visit, as the large number of visitors means longer wait line or even tickets being sold out as access to the palaces are timed and limited. Our tour guide was a lady with a great sense of humor and certainly knew how to entertain while showing us "an imitation of the Disney's iconic castle".
We also visited Hohenschwangau and the museum on the site. We were planning to see Linderhof Palace and the site at Lake Starnberg where Ludwig II died under mysterious circumstance, on our route back to Munich, but we did not make it. Seeing these would shed more light on the intriguing and tragic fate of the swan king and his fairy-tale like Neuschwanstein castle.
We arrived back at Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Many key attractions are close to each other in the heart of the city. Much of what we see today were rebuilt after the second world war. The images of the ravaged Munich could be viewed in the "Munich National Socialist Museum", which is housed in a white cube rising from the former site of the Nazi party headquarters.
