Montpelier is the capital city of Vermont. It was named for Montpellier, France.
Set against a wooded hillside, the building and its distinctive gold leaf dome are easily visible while approaching Montpelier, the smallest city to serve as capital of a U.S. state.
The building is open to visitors with remarkably few restrictions even when the legislature is in session.
When we got to the state house, there were many visitors and we were greeted by a gentleman by the name of Gary. He stood up and offered to give us a tour. He was very knowledgeable. He talked about Vermont's early days as an independent country and later joined the US. The black marble stones on the ground have visible fossilized sea creatures.
The chair in the executive office was made of wood used in the Constitution ship in Boston.
