Teaching your dog to sit is one of the first commands that you will train. This video shows how you can use the lure to coax your puppy into the desired position. Initially it is easier to use food to lure the dog, once you begin to fade the lure the reward can be a toy, treat or environmental rewards.
Teaching the sit:
1. Hold a tiny piece of food just in front of the dog at nose level.
2. Lift your hand (palm facing upwards) up to the dogs eye level and move it back over his head. (Like you are making a letter C)
3. As soon as he follows the treat into a sit, mark the behavior with a yes! Or a click, then reward in position and release.
Do not say the cue word until you are consistently luring him into position and understands the behavior. Once he is reliably following the lure, say “Sit” ONE TIME as he sits, then gradually just before he sits.
