Images of Flatirons on Green Mountain are ubiquitous symbols of the city of Boulder.
The Flatirons were known as the "Chautauqua Slabs". There are two hypotheses regarding the origin of the current name, one based on resemblance to old-fashioned clothes irons, the other based on resemblance to the Flatiron Building completed in 1902.
In 1898, Boulder citizens approved a bond issue to purchase 80 acres of land to be used as a "Chautauqua." Over the next 22 years, Flagstaff Mountain, Bear Mountain, Royal Arch, and Green Mountain were added to the early protected land system.
Chautauqua Park has several trails leading toward the flatirons.
