F-15 fighter jets zoomed over Nellis Air Force Base at supersonic speed in pursuit of "enemy" planes; Helicopters swooped in to carry out a rescue operation as A-10 Thunderbolt jets circled above the base.
Thousands of visitors watched the spectacle from the sidelines, listening intensely as a moderator described the scene.
The show, known as Aviation Nation, also referred to as America's Air Show, is the annual award-winning air show of the United States Air Force. The show is hosted at Nellis Air Force Base in November of each year. This year, it was held on Nov 10-12th.
Nellis is the leading Air Force combat training center, which affords the show with the newest Air Force aircrafts like the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lighting II as well as the Thunderbirds which are home-based at Nellis. This year, the show also displays performances by aircraft from past eras, including World War II.
The air show is a three-day event and is open to the public for the last two days. Guests park at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and ride a free shuttle bus to the base tarmac to view aircraft static displays, tour some aircraft, visit vending booths, and watch aerial demonstrations.
The show began in 2002. The theme for the 2017 air show is "Breaking Barriers Since 1947" which celebrates the 70th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
