Newport, Rhode Island, has a dozen Gilded Age mansions, many of them belonging to the wealthy Vanderbilt family amd their relatives, of railroad industry tycoons.
Breakers and the Marble House are the crown jewels. Both now belong to the Preservation Society of Newport County. Seeing the two made it very clear why Mark Twain coined the expression "The Gilded Age."
Salve Regina University is a Catholic, coeducational university founded by the Sisters of Mercy. With an 80-acre campus, bordering Newport Cliff Walk, is set on seven contiguous Gilded Age estates with 21 structures of historic significance.
